Before he hit the big time with The Biggest Loser, Bob Harper taught the most incredible spin class at Crunch Gym in West Hollywood–where I’d religiously show up week after week to sweat my ass off and be inspired by Bob’s motivational methods. Fast forward ten years and two kids later: I caught up with Bob again this morning at a small event hosted by the Grain Foods Foundation to chat about eating right and indulge in a private yoga session with the fitness guru.
First on the agenda: talking about the fact that only 4% of Americans are getting the recommended servings of grains per day. So, Bob’s on a mission to make sure we all get our Daily 6 — which can be as easy as having cereal for breakfast, a sandwich for lunch and a cup of pasta with dinner.
Even though his hit show is all about extremes — extreme exercise, extreme diet and extreme weight loss — Bob’s approach day-to-day is about balance. “We have to remember to achieve balance in life — that applies to diet and exercise,” he says. “Bread and grains are important sources of energy.”
He discourages extreme diets which shun carbs or any food group. “It’s not healthy, maintainable or realistic.”
Bob actually still teaches a spin class at Crunch…and after being reintroduced to him, I might just go back. And, you could experience Bob’s amazing approach too–he and the Grain Foods Foundation are giving away a 90-minute training session: enter to win at GoWithTheGrain.org.
